Moving a license to another server

A license is active on one server at a time. To use it on another server, you release it from the old one, then activate it on the new one with the same license key. The key never changes.

What moves and what does not

  • Moves: the license, with its edition and the date its updates run through.
  • Does not move: BeePanel's data and configuration, such as users, settings, and call history. They stay on the old server, which keeps them after the release. The new server starts with its own setup.
  • Cannot move: a trial. It stays with the server it started on.

Before you start

  • The license key. Sign in to the customer portal with Portal sign-in at the top of this site, open Licenses, then the license, and use the copy button next to License key.
  • A release left on the license. Each license has a limited number of releases in any 12 months and a waiting period between two releases of the same kind, on the server or in the portal; the portal shows them under Release allowance and cooldowns. Releasing on the old server and in the portal share the same allowance.
  • Internet access from both servers to licensing.beepanel.io.
  • A user with the Administration permission on the old server.

Moving a license from a working server

  1. On the old server, open Management > License.
  2. Under Activation and machine binding, choose Release this activation….
  3. Enter the Current license key and choose Release activation. Licensed features lock on the old server; its data and configuration stay there.
  4. On the new server, activate the same key: during setup on Enter existing license key, or later on its License page. See Trial and license activation.

Moving a license from a server that is gone

If the old server is broken, deleted, or unreachable, release the license in the portal:

  1. Sign in to the portal, open Licenses, then the license.
  2. Under Activation, choose Force re-host, then Confirm forced re-host.
  3. Activate the same key on the new server.

If the old server is still running somewhere, it keeps working until it next reaches the licensing service, at a service start or before an update; then it locks.

Reinstalling on the same server

A normal beepanel uninstall keeps the license, so installing again needs no key. After beepanel uninstall --delete-data, enter the same license key during setup; as long as the operating system was not reinstalled, BeePanel recognizes the machine and reconnects the license without using a release. After an operating system reinstall or a disk replacement, release the license on the old installation or in the portal first.

When the server's hardware changes

If the server's hardware or virtual machine identity changes, the License page reports This host no longer matches the recorded machine identity. Refresh the binding to restore licensed features. Choose Refresh machine binding to record the new identity; data and configuration are not affected. A trial cannot be refreshed: it stays locked until it ends or a purchased key is activated.

Checking the result

  • The new server's License page shows Licensed features are active.
  • The old server's License page reports the activation as released.
  • In the portal, the license's Activation section shows an Active installation again.

Common problems

This host does not match both machine signals recorded for the activation, so nothing was released.

The old server's identity changed since activation. Choose Refresh machine binding on its License page, then release again. If that is not possible, release the license in the portal.

This activation is in its release cooldown. Wait, then retry the same request.

The license was released recently. Wait until the waiting period the portal shows has ended.

The release allowance for this license is exhausted.

The license has no release left in the current 12 months. Releases become available again as earlier ones fall out of that period.

No activation slot is available for this machine. Release the old installation or move the license from the portal.

The license is still active on the old server. Release it there or in the portal, then activate again.
